Tajikistan Cities with Hotels
 Tajikistan, independent nation in Central
Asia, bordered on the north by Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, on the east by China,
on the south by Afghanistan, and on the west by Uzbekistan. It is also known as
Tadzhikistan, and was formerly the Tadzhik Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) of
the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Tajikistan contains an
ethnically based political subunit, the former Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous
Oblast, also known as the Badakhshoni Kuhi Viloyat, which occupies 44.5 percent
of the republic. Tajikistan is extremely mountainous, and settlement is
concentrated in the lowlands. Its area is 143,100 sq km (55,250 sq mi), and
Dushanbe is the capital and largest city.

Land and Resources
Mountains occupy 93 percent of Tajikistan's territory, and
almost half of the republic lies at an elevation of 3000 m (9843 ft) or greater.
The Pamirs lie in eastern Tajikistan and contain the highest mountain in the
former USSR, Communism Peak (7498 m/24,599 ft). Only about 7 percent of the
republic's land area is arable due to the mountainous terrain. Large glaciers
feed numerous swift-flowing streams, endowing the region with substantial
hydroelectric potential. Lowland areas are confined to the Fergana Valley in the
republic's extreme north, and to the lower reaches of tributaries of the Amu
Darya in the republic's southeast. The major rivers are the Syrdarìya, which
flows through the Fergana Valley; the Zeravshan, located in the northeast; and
Kofarnihon, Vakhsh, and Panj, tributaries of the Amu Darya that together drain
more than three-fourths of the republic's territory.
The climate is extremely continental, with much variation in
climatic conditions. Temperatures can reach 48° C (118.4° F), and lows -63° C
(-81.4° F). Great contrasts in temperature exist between alpine and lowland
areas. While the average daily temperature in July is greater than 31° C (87.8°
F) in the valleys, it is less than 10° C (50° F) in the mountains. Precipitation
is meager overall, although mountains in the west receive an average of more
than 1600 mm (62.4 in) per year. Steppe and alpine vegetation predominate.
Wildlife is extremely varied and includes the endangered snow leopard as well as
numerous varieties of mountain goat and sheep, including the Siberian horned
goat and the rare markhor.
